Red Bull Nordenskiöldsloppet saw plenty of interest when the historical cross country race returned after 132 years of sleep. Now the dates have been set for the 2017 race. The competition is going to be held over easter on the 15th of April following the original extreme distance of 220 km’s.
The race is held in a classic style in tracked terrain . The registration for the 2017 race opens on the 7th of June at nordenskioldsloppet.se
Once again threefold Vasalopp winner Daniel Tynell is appointed as sportive director, ensuring all of the sportive aspects of the race are correct and making sure that the contestants have the best of conditions.
– This year’s competition was one of the coolest I’ve been through. Few believed that a 20-kilometer race would be decided in 8.5 hours – in a sprint at the finish! It was also really nice to see the joy of all the athletes who survived one of the world’s toughest challenges. It was a race full of winners, says Daniel Tynell.
Red Bull Nordenskiöld Race is open to both elite and amateurs. The 220 km long track will largely follow the historical course from the 1800’s and run from Purkijaur just outside Jokkmokk to Kvikkjokk and back again.
– The goal is to have 500 on the starting line next year, and to build on what we started this year. We want to create an annual event with international appeal, says Wolfgang Mehl, promoter and organizational driving force behind the project.
The extreme distance race has laid dormant since 1884 when polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld organized the competition to prove their expedition members’ ability to harvest long distances in a short time.
